How to find a niche topic for your blog

Author: Henrietta Tan

So you want to blog for a living? First you need to find yourself a NICHE TOPIC! From a blogger who's been blogging for a living since 2006. I'd show you the nuts and bolts of making a living out of blogging. ___________________________

So you want to blog for a living? There are so many hypes and scams out there telling you that you can turn your computer into automated money making machine in 15 minutes or something of that nature. I don't believe there is. If there was something of that nature, trust me, I would have found it. There are a lot of unscrupulous marketers out there trying to sell you something playing the mind game of human fear and greed. We fear to be broke and we are greedy by nature. Who doesn't want to be rich overnight?

What do I do for a living? I blog and that's all I do. How do I do it? Honestly, it started very much of a coincidence. I was always a financial person so naturally I started a financial blog but my knowledge just didn't match up to my personal interest and passion so I couldn't get a lot of valuable information out there for people to want to come back and read my blog day in and day out.

To have a successful blog, you have to know what you are talking about. It doesn't matter if it's Hollywood gossip or Internet marketing; people want information. And if you can provide something unique, you've got your niche over a lot of other bloggers.

Good thing I had a second hobby which I love besides financeā€¦ That's to read up on celebrity's glamorous lifestyles. I decided to start a blog on gossip just for fun. It turned out the blog which I started just for fun has become my personal business. I've been writing gossip since 2006 and make a living doing it.

For people who really want to make a living out of blogging. I have a few great tips. I normally tell people that I'm the best person to speak to if you were starting a blog. Surely there are tons of experts out there but me starting off completely clueless, I have made countless mistakes and if I had knew more, I would have done it much faster and saved myself A LOT of time.

The world is changing and even the last five years, the Internet world has evolved so much. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry along with Suzy, Lindsay and Lucy want to be a blogger. Hence, we have stiffer competitions.

You've read this far, you are likely to be very serious about starting a blog or even thinking about blogging for a living. Yes, there are a lot of pros being a blogger. You have tremendous freedom; you work at your own time, your own pace. I'm off to Miami on Saturday and I'll still be blogging. But like everything else in life, it's not all pros.

Start blogging part-time, you can't realistically quit your day job and blog full-time and expect to make money next week.

If you truly want to start a blog; you have to start off by finding a topic that you absolutely love and know enough about.

Don't write just for the money. You won't succeed that way at least not in the long haul. I don't know of any get rich quick scheme to share with you but I do believe if you take the time to do it right one-step at a time, you can make a decent living blogging from the comfort of your own home or anywhere in the world.

Remember it's the worldwide web so if it's your passion, it could well be someone else's who's sitting 7000 miles away. It's much better to write about something you love and you know about than something you're completely clueless about.

So rule # 1: Find A Topic You'd Absolutely Love to Blog About even for free because you know what? At the beginning it is a lot of work and no money just to get your blog going. On the other side of the coin, if you're not short-sighted, money will become part of the equation. Determination, honesty, integrity, hard work = PRIDE & MONEY.

If you have a topic which you truly would love to write about. Now it's time to do your research, find out about your competitions. Do you have enough content to blog about it extensively? Can you see yourself doing it 12 months, 24 months or even 60 months down the road?

If your answer is "YES" to all the questions above then you've got yourself a niche topic for your upcoming blog.

I'd continue to write about how to start a blog one-step at a time. So stay tuned..
